Andrew James Towlerton BDS DRDP
Andrew qualified from Birmingham University Dental School in 1991. Two years in General Practice were followed by nine years in the Royal Air Force Dental Branch where he reached the rank of Squadron Leader. One of the greatest benefits that Andrew remembers of practice within the Armed Forces was an ability to develop enhanced clinical skills, free of the constraints that he experienced in general practice. This emphasis on producing high quality dentistry, and the focus on post graduate education, has been a motivating factor for him since returning to civilian practice.
In 2002 he entered into the Restorative Dentistry program at the Eastman Dental Institute (UCL). Over a five year period he studied a broad range of advanced restorative dental techniques, including a year of dental material science and a further year studying sports related dental trauma. The final stage of the course is the requirement to present 20 individual items of clinical work and two multidisciplinary patient treatment log diaries for examination and viva. In 2008 he passed the Diploma in Restorative Dental Practice (DRDP) with a Distinction During this time he also completed the 18 month ‘One to One’ implant course at Sheffield University Dental School. The program involves hands on training of planning, placement and restoration of implants on the patients that attend the implant clinics.
He is a keen photographer and combines this with his passion for aesthetic dentistry. He finds the greatest challenge of modern dentistry is tailoring treatment plans that match patient expectation whilst ensuring that the restorations placed have long term functional stability. Andrew co-owns a Private Practice in Nottinghamshire where he strives to provide no compromise dentistry, tailored to the patients requirements and to the realities of maintaining a busy General Practice.
